Photo Friday: ‘Merica
As I mentioned earlier this week, I canceled my social media accounts. One of the things I loved about social media initially was the humor that it allowed. I used it personally as a photo journal and diary of funny things I stumbled across while wandering this crazy planet. One example was a little series I started on Twitter and moved to Instagram. I called the series Love in Cement, where I paid homage to people declaring their love by scratching their names into wet concrete. I still take pictures every time I see names in cement.
So now I’m starting a new series here on theMangoTimes blog. To keep it general, I’m calling it Photo Friday. The goal is simple. Share one photo each week. Now there are no hard and fast rules. Like most endeavors, I’m really following a general suggestion.
To kick things off I am sharing an oldie but a goodie: a crushed Budweiser can with “America” printed across it. Some days, this feels like a pretty accurate snapshot of where we are as a country. The weight of disagreements, conflict and political polarization can feel crushing. For some, promoting the idea of an idealized version of America means restoring a country that matches their own worldview, religion, or economic comfort zone, but for many others, that version of America is reminiscent of a return to exclusion, bigotry, and prejudice.
Again, the crushing weight of worldviews.
Sorry to come out swinging on week one—but this photo is still a favorite.
Quietly making noise,
Fletch
