Champ Update

It’s time for an update about Champ the Black Lab! As many of you know, Champ is one of two new members to join the crew here at theMangoTimes. Last summer, I was on the lookout for a new Labrador Retriever to join me on all my garage adventures, walks, hikes, and escapades. I’ll save the details of the second story for another time, but in a terrific plot twist, Kendra learned an important lesson: You never open the door to a potential dog unless you're ready for me to push that door wide open and bring home a new puppy! So now, instead of just Champ the Lab we happily reside in a two-dog paradise (you can meet Bess the Boston Retriever Here). But lets get back to the wonderful Champ update.

When I first found Champ on the Labrador Retriever Rescue of Fresno facebook page, he was starting his journey through recovery after being abandoned by his previous owners and sustaining a few physical injuries. A local police officer in Tulare found Champ with a gaping infected sore on his neck. Thankfully, LRRF came to the rescue and connected Champ with an amazing ER vet who saved his life. Following surgery for his infected wound, Champ valiantly got back on his feet, only to find out he had a hip injury.

Champ’s Left Hip Socket Dislocation

X-rays revealed that his left hip was completely unhinged, with the ball of his femur dislodged from its socket. Was he hit by a car? Abused? We'll never know for sure. Champ went back in for more surgery. The FHO procedure removed the ball of his femur, allowing his leg to naturally reposition itself back into the socket. Scar tissue developed around the joint, securing it in place, and with time and effort, Champ's life would be allowed to continue with minimal change.

When I finally met Champ and decided to adopt him, he had already been through a few weeks of recovery from his surgeries. His neck and hind end were shaved, but his thick black coat was slowly regaining its beauty. He still had one more obstacle. His weight. At 125lbs, he still carried extra weight around his belly that made it a challenge for him to walk comfortably on his new hip. A short 50-yard walk would quickly make him favor his hip, leading him back to his cozy bed for some rest.

Our vet, Dr. Barrett recommended multiple short daily walks to help Champ regain his strength, and so we embarked on a journey together through the wet California winter. We started with walks to the corner, then gradually ventured beyond. It took months of patience and dedication, but we celebrated the day Champ proudly completed a full mile! Along the way, Champ met neighbors and friends who cheered him on.

Off the trail, we made changes in the kitchen as well. To support his health, Champs meals were specific. Healthy dry food with a dollop of pumpkin, fish oil tablets, and glucosamine tablets. Then to help getting in and out of the car, we grabbed a collapsible set of steps.

Now, let's talk about where we are today. After 9 months, I'm beyond thrilled to announce that Champ has achieved an incredible milestone—weighing in at a healthy 85lbs! His determination and progress have been fantastic. He now effortlessly walks the necessary 4 miles to accompany me to and from my dental office. There's no limp or favoring of his hip; he exhibits full function and mobility in his neck.

I love that we were allowed to be part of Champ’s recovery and would love to encourage any reader considering pet adoption to consider taking the time and effort to welcome a dog that needs a loving home!
